Mexican cultured pearls are cultivated in the rainbow-lipped saltwater oyster Pteria sterna, mainly in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico; this results in a small annual production. Mexican cultured pearls rarely reach a diameter over 11 mm. They are desirable because of their colours – grey, black, brown and purple with strong overtones.
